While many large companies will enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having a company track their reputation for them, the rest of us need something a little less expensive–or better yet, free!

1. Your Industry

If you simply don’t have time to track everything that specifically relates to your company–or your competition–you can still track news that relates to your industry. Moreover and Yahoo are just a couple of resources that offer RSS feeds for aggregated industry news.

2. Mainstream Media News

One of the best ways to track mainstream media mentions of your company is to use Google News. Enter your company name, sort the results by date published and then subscribe to the RSS feed. You’ll get instant RSS updates of any news items that mention your business. Example for “apple“.

3. News Buzz

It’s one thing to track any news that relates to your business, but what if you just want to know about the news that becomes popular? Sites such as Digg and Reddit will let you search for submitted stories that match your company name. Subscribe to the resulting RSS feed and you’ll know about any story on Digg that mentions your company–or your biggest rival.

4. Social Media News

By the time a hot news story gets picked-up by the mainstream media, it could have made the rounds for days in the blogosphere. You can capitalize on positive buzz and put out any reputation fires by tracking social media. Technorati is one of the best options for tracking social media sites. Custom RSS feeds let you get quick updates on any blog that utters your company name.

5. Blog Posts

If a blog happens to “ping” the blogosphere, the chances are that it will get on Google Blog Search. Even if the blog isn’t in Google news, or doesn’t make the main Google index, Google Blog Search might still find that story that mentions your CEO or your recent product launch. Get alerts to matching stories via email or RSS.

6. Blog Comments

Sometimes tracking a blog post doesn’t reveal the full conversation about your business. The blog post might be positive, but those leaving comments could attack your reputation. 7. Blog Conversations

A negative blog post appears on a low-trafficked blog and there are no comments to track. End of story? Not quite, what if a very popular blogger picks up on the story? 8. Blog Trends

10. Photos

Did an employee release a top-secret photo of your new products? Did someone snap a photo of your CEO leaving a strip-club? The chances are high that they might upload it to image hosting sites such as Flickr. 11. Videos

So what if your CEO was caught on video having a lap-dance? Ouch! Ok, less damaging, someone releases a video showing a negative product review. Google Video recently switched focus to index videos from many online hosting sites (such as YouTube and MetaCafe). Now you can keep track of videos that include your company.

12. Tags

Wouldn’t it be great if you could enter a keyword and see who used that word as a “tag” How much better would it be if you could see matching tags across more than a dozen sites? Keotag.com does just that, making it easy for you to track if someone tags a page using your company or product name.

13. Forum Posts

Sometimes the most important conversations don’t happen on blogs. Forums and message boards can host conversations about your company and you’d never know about it. Don’t panic! Sites such as Boardtracker.com will keep an eye on popular forums for you and alert you by RSS if your company is mentioned in a thread.

14. Changing Information

Wikipedia is one of the most trusted resources for information on the web. You might be interested in any updates to your company profile or maybe you want to know if your competitor is trying to remove links to your web site. Fortunately you can track change history for any Wikipedia page and have the changes sent to your RSS reader of choice.

15. Job Listings

If your competitor wants to start a new service or launch a new product, the chances are they’ll need to hire new staff to achieve this. Classifieds search engine Oodle scours many online job listings and aggregates the information in a central location. Set up RSS feeds for searches on your biggest competitors and you’ll know whenever they list a vacant position.

16. Financial Filings

You can get a good feel for the financial health of your publicly-traded competitors by keeping a close eye on their SEC filings. Use Edgar Online and you’ll know if they’re subject to an SEC investigation or if their CEO is dumping stock faster than Martha Stewart.

17. Conference Calls

Sticking with public companies, sometimes you can learn some competitive information by listening to the company’s conference calls. But who has time for that? SeekingAlpha lets you subscribe to the RSS feed of conference call transcripts. Open up the transcript and you can quickly get a snapshot of their financial health. You might even learn about a new product launch–one which you might want to think about for your business.

18. Patents

Keeping track of patent filings was notoriously difficult before Google Patent Search came along. Now you can keep any eye on patents filed that relate to your industry. Better yet, keep track of patents that might violate your company held patents.

19. Events

Yahoo’s Upcoming lets you get RSS alerts on any new event that matches your selected keyword. You can keep track of conferences that you might want to attend, or sponsor. In addition, you could keep track of seminars or meeting being held by your competitors.

20. New Products

Let’s say you want to get some ideas of products that might be hot right now. Amazon.com lets you view product “tags” and then review similar tags. You can use this to get an idea of companion products that you might want to launch.

21. Search Query Trends

What search queries are popular at Google right now? Thanks to Google Trends you can get an idea of which keywords are most searched for. You can narrow your research to specific countries or cities–letting you know if a product has global or local appeal.

22. Keyword Referrals

Sure you could probably take an educated guess as to which sites might get the most traffic for a particular keyword, but it’s more fun to actually spy on your competitors. Compete’s Search Analytics allows you to enter a keyword and see which web sites are getting traffic for that keyword.

23. Site Referrals

Ok, so maybe you’re not sure which keywords you should target for your next SEM campaign. Compete’s Search Analytics will also let you enter any domain name and see which keywords are driving traffic to that site. Now you know which keywords your competitors are targeting.

24. Email Updates

If you’re not quite ready for all of that RSS reader nonsense, you can still keep track of the latest buzz via email. Google Alerts let you track web, blogs, news and groups for any phrase you want. Select daily, weekly or “as it happens” updates and you’ll get an email whenever your company name is mentioned.

25. The Untrackable

Some stuff just can’t be tracked that easily. If you want to track changes at a site–even if they don’t offer RSS or email updates–there are many tools that will do it for you. Our favorite is Copernic’s Tracker which, for $50, will let you keep an eye on any web site. Use it to monitor RipOffReport.com, forum threads, or even your competitor’s web site.

26. Anything You Want

You don’t have to be a developer in order to create your own custom buzz monitoring tool. Thanks to Yahoo Pipes, you can quickly set up your own RSS tracking, complete with filters. Want to track Twitter for mentions of your company? Not a problem with Yahoo Pipes.

10 Tips to Manage Photos Better using Google Picasa

Google’s Picasa is probably one of the best photo managers available as it makes organizing, managing and sharing photos a lot easier. Its ever growing popularity can be attributed to its simplicity and ease of use. Picasa 2 is currently available as a download for Windows and Linux but a Mac version is expected to be released soon.

Here are some tips for Picasa users to efficiently manage their photo collections:

1. Tag your Photos using Keywords

Select a few photos (Use CTRL + Click), and press CTRL + K to add keywords to your photos. This could help a lot in sorting through and finding a photo later.

2. Geotag Photos using Google Earth

If you’ve got Google Earth installed on your computer, geotagging your photos is a piece of cake. Select the pictures, go to Tools >> Geotag >> Geotag using Google Earth to go to the location where the photos were taken. Position the crosshairs on Google Earth after reaching the location, press Geotag and you’re done!

3. Upload Photos to Flickr from Picasa

Ok, you can obviously upload your pictures to Picasa Web Albums from Picasa, but what if Flickr is your favourite? You cannot use Picasa to upload photos to Flickr, but there’s a third party tool to the rescue.

Picasa2Flickr is how it’s called, and it adds a ‘Send To Flickr’ button to Picasa. Click it, authorize and then you can upload photos to Flickr directly from Picasa.

4. Batch Edit Photos

If you want to edit multiple photos at once in Picasa, use CTRL + Click to select them all. Then, use the option Pictures >> Batch Edit from the menu bar to apply effects to all the photos you’ve selected.

5. Publish to Blogger, Export as HTML Pages

In addition to uploading your photos to your Picasa Web Albums, Picasa makes it easy to upload your photos to a blog hosted on Google’s Blogger Service. Use the options from the Tools menu to share your photos with others on your Blogger Blog.

Picasa can also make HTML Gallery pages for you locally, you can share them around computers. It’s only easier to browse the photos in your browser. Use the Create menu to export photos as HTML Gallery Pages.

6. Gift CD with only selected Photos

There’s only one possibility when creating Gift CDs in Picasa: you can only add an entire folder to a gift CD, not particular photos. There’s a work around though, here’s how:

Do this for the photos you don’t want to be included in the gift CD: Right Click on the photos you want to exclude and select Hide from the menu that appears. Once you’ve done this for all the photos, press the Gift CD option on the toolbar to burn a disk only with those specific photos.

7. Make a Photo Black and White

Five detailed procedures to create black and white copies of your photos are nicely explained here.

8. Faster Zooming

When you’re viewing a single photo in Picasa, you can zoom into the photo by using your mouse’s scroll wheel. Or, there’s an even quicker way to zoom: use the left mouse button, draw a diagonal line across the photo, and it gets bigger instantly.

9. Full Screen Photo Viewing

Put your cursor over a photo, press CTRL and then ALT. A full screen view of the picture is shown immediately.

10. Picasa Shortcuts

Picasa has got shortcuts for almost every other action, you can see a list here. Make sure you master them. They could really come handy. Some of my favoites are:

Ctrl-A: Select all photos in album
Ctrl-1: View your photos as small thumbnails
Ctrl-2: View your photos as large thumbnails
F11: Use Picasa in full-screen mode
Ctrl-4: Start a slideshow
Ctrl-3: Open an image in “Edit Mode”
Ctrl-Shift-H: Flip image horizontally
Ctrl-Shift-V: Flip image vertically
Ctrl-Shift-B: Add black and white effect

This effort represents an attempt to build a complete index of Open Source / Free GIS related software projects. The effort has some way to go, especially for projects in languages other than English. The definition of GIS has been kept loose to encompass a broad range of projects which deal with spatial data.

So you have decide to create your first blog on Blogger. It has a simple and fine interface that takes care of many things for you. This is my suggestion to you for your first free essential must haves for your blog.

1. Feedburner - It generates an smart feed compatible with all feed readers for free like my feed. It allows you to put easy subscribe buttons for XML, Add to yahoo, Add to Newsgator, Add to MSN etc. Read about how their single feed policy can benefit you.

It can give you a cool feed count chicklet button to show how many readers are using your feed to read your blog. It also gives you a headline animator which you can attach to your blog to display the recent 5 posts in a nice animated fashion. 2. Haloscan - Trackback is an essential component of blogging these days. Unfortunately Blogger does not have trackback. Haloscan provides you with a seamless way to integrate free trackback in your blog by adding a small code. You can also integrate their comments component if you like to replace the Blogger comments. Read about Haloscan or Blogger comments.

The benefits are that you can edit Haloscan comments, and open them in a pop up and keep them separate from your post (Blogger allows you to only delete comments and not edit them, also on the post page all comments will show whether you like it or not).

The main disadvantage is it will not email you these comments (like Blogger) for free and it is difficult to track where these comments were made. Another major benefit is that it allows you to send pings and trackback to other sites when you mention about them in your posts.

3. Imageshack - Dont you want to fill your blog with images without hassles of registration. Imageshack provides an excellent interface to take care of your free image hosting needs. Maybe it is this the fastest way to host an image on the web. Allows lots of image format, hotlinking, transloading from other sites. Its a good idea to register to keep track of all your images in one place. It is much convenient than the proposed Hello and Picassa options…

Update: Blogger enabled hosting of images on its own webspace making it easier to host images in your posts. But you cannot manage or edit / delete your blogger images in any way

4. Technorati - Create and add a technorati profile. It allows you to claim your blog in this huge blogosphere. It allows you to put an excellent technorati search on your blog. The best part is that whenever someone mentions or links to any page of your blog, technorati knows and a search for your blog on technorati shows exactly how many sites link to which pages of your blog and when they were added with a small description. See why you need a technorati account.

5 - Sitemeter - Just takes 5 minutes to get a free tracker which gives you realtime site traffic statistics to check the quantity and quality of your site traffic with detailed referrer and geographic data. I have checked out several other tracking sites, but this one seems the best. Although you need to keep a counter visible (as a logo, visitor counter) and the statistics can be made private too.

StatCounter gives much more detailed statistics and the counter is totally invisible and free totally till you start getting large traffic, when you need to pay. But the disadvantage is that both of these track the last 100 visitors only, while another free service Extreme Tracking tracks them all… but you statistics cannot be made private. More options I like are Google Analytics for deep traffic statistical analysis and it is hidden too.

6. Feedblitz - It quickly allows your blog visitors to subscribe by email to your new posts. They just have to enter their email. You decide which page opens after they press Subscribe. A quick confirmatory email to them and they get 1 email daily with all your new posts. You can decide if you want to send the full post or short posts with defined number of characters. Very good to keep your subscribers informed of new posts. It allows them to unsubscribe easily also. Example for our blog.

7. My Blog Log - Tracks outgoing links to let you know where your traffic is going. The free limited version data is not in much detail, yet provides a good idea. You can also add a Top 5 Our Links module to your web site. Now they have a MyBlogLog community to get some extra site traffic too.

8 AudioBlogger- Audioblogger allows free unlimited audio posts from any phone to your Blogger blog. You call the number (Currently a US phone number), record a post, then your blog is updated with an audioblogger icon and a link to your recorded audio.

9. w.bloggar - It is a Post and Template editor, with several features and resources that the browser based blog editors do not offer. It enables users to have only one interface to several accounts hosted on several different sites, using different publishing systems. Helps to manage multiple blogs on Blogger very effectively.

10 Blogger Mobile - opens a new concept of Moblogging i.e. blogging by your mobile phone. When you send text or photos from your mobile device to go@blogger.com they’re automatically posted to your new blog page.

11. Blogexplosion - helps you get confirmed traffic to your blog. The principle is simple, you visit other peoples blogs and they visit yours. For every 2 blogs you visit, one visitor comes to you. This is very good if you are new blogger and have hardly any traffic. Definitely try the Rent a Blog advertising swap service.

12. Pingoat - Pinging lets dozens of blogging services know you’ve updated your site and increases traffic to your blog. SEO Text and Content Optimization

Content is king. That’s for sure. Your search engine optimization efforts can be really much, it doesn’t help if you don’t have good and unique content. Quality content is both important for the users of your website and the search engine spiders. Search engines honor unique content because it increases the satisfaction of the search engine users. Different sources of good text and information are a necessity that users come back - both for the search engine and your website. If a search engine result page (SERP) has among ten listings 5 times the same content, this will be pretty unsatisfactory. Thus, good SEO content will fall back positively to the ranking of your website.

The users honor your good content as well. They will come back and recommend the site, moreover, you will more likely get links from other websites. Of course, writing unique content is a tough job. But you will get rewarded. Whereas those who do only keyword inclusion in a standard text will be punished. Not too long ago, webmaster uploaded thousands of webpages with the same text, just the keywords were automatically exchanged. No chance for them to get good rankings any more!

So actually the right term should be content creation instead of content optimization.

Vice versa, duplicate content will reduce your ranking. If done heavily we talk about text spam and that can have serious effects - even an exclusion of the SERPs can be thinkable.

Good content goes closely along with a good text amount. A reasonable text amount is considered to be 300 to 400 words at least. 200 words and less will be hardly recognized by search engines. The keyword density in the SEO text should not exceed 5 to 8%, else it could be keyword spamming.

Last but not least, good content and information will more likely draw links to your website which will boost your rankings even more.
Good content attributes

1. Unique information
As mentioned before the content needs to be unique. No-one likes to read the same content again and again on different webpages or categories on one website.
2. Scannable structure
The text should have good structure for the eyes, so you can fly over the text and right away get the most important information. Highlighting the keywords is very efficient as well.
3. An answer to a question
A website is worth reading when you get an answer to the question you entered in the search slot of a search engine, for instance. Still happens often enough, that you have to scan 10 different websites to get a solution.
4. Quality of grammar, punctuation and spelling
If you stumble upon mistakes all the time, you’ll lose patience and attention and thus even a professional text will become annoying.

The header of a website is the first part that is visible to search engines and search engine users. They mostly transport technical data for the search engines or the browser. For the users of your website is it not so important as the header and the meta tags are not shown on the screen.

Title tag (importance: ++)
The title tag belongs to the header but is no meta tag. It will appear in the reverse bar of the browser and is also often used in the search engine result pages as the link to the respective website. The title is placed between TITLE and /TITLE.

Meta description (importance: +)
The meta description tag is used to describe the content of this website. Years ago the search engines used it heavily, in the meantime it doesn’t have too much influence anymore, at least not with the big search engines. Smaller ones might still rely on the meta description tag. Still this tag should be used because sometimes it will be shown in the search engine result pages (SERPs), instead of the usual text snippets. So a good meta description is important to increase the click-rate for your webpage in the SERPs.

Meta keywords (importance: -)
Meta keywords have become more or less unimportant. You should evaluate carefully if your effort you put into meta keyword creation will pay off. They provide additional text for crawler-based search engines, but as these don’t have a relevant market share, meta keywords can be neglected.

Meta robots (importance: +-)
With the meta robots text you can exclude search engine spiders. It lets you specify that a particular page should NOT be indexed by the search engine. If you want your pages to be indexed, no special input is necessary, just leave the meta robots tag away in your source code.

SEO Checklist

As with many things, it's often worth making a checklist and ticking each item off as you go. Here is a simple SEO Checklist to apply to your site. Tick off all these items from the SEO checklist and your website will be in much better shape.

This list is in no particular order.

Decide what search phrases you want to target. Use a tool such as the Digital Point suggestion tool to see what search phrases are popular, and optimise your site for these. You can optimise for any number of phrases - a bigger site can target a greater range of phrases. If you don't know how to research phrases properly, pick some phrases that you think people might search for, and optimise for these. Make sure the phrases you choose are relevant to your content.
Clean up your URLs. No capital letters, no spaces, no special characters. Seperate each word with a "-" dash. Make sure each URL accurately describes the page.
Remove Querystrings from URLs. No question marks in your URLs.
Redirect the non-www version of your site. When you enter domain.com into the browser, it should redirect you to www.domain.com using a SEO friendly 301 redirection.
Make sure you don't link to "index.htm" or "index.php". Instead, link to "/".
Remove frames from your site - unless you really, really know what you are doing.
Ensure the title is different on every page of the site.
Ensure the Meta Description and keywords are different on every page of the site, or leave them empty.
Ensure every page has a H1 heading. Ensure the main body content is immediately after the H1, with no breadcrumbs or navigation in between.
If your main navigation is flash or image based, ask yourself if it can be done using CSS. If it can, do it.
If using CSS styled text for navigation is unthinkable, then add text based footer navigation on every page.
Add a sitemap, containing a link to every page on your site.
Add a Google XML sitemap. Even if it's just a simple list of all the URLs on your site. Submit this to Google through the Google Sitemaps program (sign up if you have not already)
Is your website tables based? Consider a cleaner CSS based layout for your site.
Have you got a website statistics program installed? Do you know how to access it, and do you check it regularly? If not, do it.
Do you know where your website currently sits for your main phrases? If not, go find out. Check Google, the localized version of Google eg google.co.nz, Yahoo and MSN. Very few visitors will search past page 3.
Check the Optimisation of each page. Pick 1 search phrase that is relevant to the content on the page. Ensure the page contains the phrase in the Tilte, H1 heading, twice in the Meta Description, twice in the opening paragraph, and also in the URL if possible. The page you are reading now is optimised for "SEO Checklist".
Have you got good content? SEO will be much harder if you don't have plenty of original text content, so perhaps spend less time reading SEO Articles, and more time writing good content.
Check the source order of your page. Good source code will have the page content as clost to the top of the HTML document as possible, and the least important elements such as sidebars and footers last. If you can get the content above the main navigation, great.
Spider your website using a program such as Xenu. Action all recommendations that it makes, such as fixing broken links. Look carefully at the list of URLs, and make sure they look tidy (no spaces, capitals etc).
Optimise your images. Ensure all are named appropriately, have alt tags and are placed near text that is relevant to the image.
Check the search engines to see how well indexed your site is. If the search engines have indexed pages that have since been moved or deleted, setup a 301 redirect to redirect all trafic that these pages generate (or lose it).
If you are a local "bricks and mortar" business, make sure you use your town / city / country on every page, in the title if possible, and in close proximity to your chosen search phrase.

If you can tick off most of the items on this list, your site will be looking in reasonable shape.
